Cryotherapy is a procedure that uses extreme cold to destroy tissue. This process is called cryo-necrosis, tissue destruction by freezing. It is perfect for treating skin conditions such as: skin tags, age spots, warts, actinic keratosis, verrucas, milia, cherry angiomas and other benign skin imperfections.
No anaesthesia is required for cryotherapy and less scarring is produced than other techniques of skin removal which means it has minimal post-op care. The treatment is quick and can be integrated into daily practices. The treatment is performed using a CryoPen, an applicator which is held as close as possible to the skin imperfection and moved rapidly towards and away from it. This usually lasts 1-30 seconds depending on the size and depth of the imperfection.
Can anyone have Cryotheraphy?
Yes, but cautions about skin type and location should be considered when deciding on freezing times. Individuals with higher levels of cryoglobins should be treated with caution. Darker skin tones aren't as suitable for cryotherapy as the treatment will kill melanocytes around the treated area making the skin lighter in the area.
How long do the results last?
For most lesions, cryotheapy is a permanent removal. Some lesions are harder to remove than others in which case it is necessary to obtain the best result with the least damage to the surrounding skin. In other instances, deep lesions may take several aggressive treatments to get results.
Will there be any scarring?
Scarring does not usually occur with this treatment although darkening or lightening of the skin may occur temporarily. This pigment change is more common in darker skin tones.
